Municipal Recycling
Municipalities play an important role in supporting and expanding the recycling industry on both a local and state level. This happens through coordinating waste services, building and maintaining recycling infrastructure, providing education and resources, and planning for the future. Support for planning, implementation, and funding are available through state and national organizations.
Shiawassee Recycling Workgroup
In an effort to expand the resources available in Shiawassee County, The Cook Family Foundation has provided support for the formation of the Shiawassee Recycling Work Group. They are helping to bridge gaps that are otherwise not being filled, in support of resource recovery efforts for our local communities.

Drop-Off Recycling in Our County
Drop-off recycling centers are a great way to expand access, increase recycling, and keep costs low. They are a great fit for small and rural communities where curbside services are not available or not a good fit.
County residents currently have limited options for dropping off recyclable materials, with the primary location being the Greater Laingsburg Recyclers.
Coordinating Curbside Services
There are many benefits to single-hauler agreements for small and rural communities.
These agreements typically provide lower cost services for residents, expanded service options for curbside recycling and yard waste, and streamlined customer service.
Community and environmental benefits include less wear and tear on local roadways, lower emissions due to denser routes, and less noise from fewer trucks driving through neighborhoods.

Materials Management Planning Committee
All Michigan counties are currently working on their Materials Management Planning, which is required by state law amendments to Part 115 updated in 2023. These plans will establish a baseline understanding of how materials are currently managed within each county, set goals for the future, outline how the established goals will be achieved, and what success looks like.
Shiawassee County’s Planning Committee
Planning for Shiawassee County’s Materials Management Plan is underway. Anyone can attend these public meetings and stay up to date with the committee’s work. We encourage public officials to follow the committee’s progress and get involved so that your community is represented in the final plan.
The County Health Department is leading this effort. Information is available on their website, or you may contact the department for information.
